a
newspaper is holding a competition to win either a sub-orbital spaceflight or the cash equivalent worth $147,647.
at first there was no question about it--if i won i was going to space--but after looking into
sub-orbital flights i'm not so sure anymore (actually i didn't even know the prize was sub-orbital until i read the terms & conditions, but i guess that is just assumed because getting into orbit requires quite a lot more technological effort and $$$). from what i gather it's a 2.5 hour trip straight up and straight down with ~6 minutes of weightlessness, managing to get only slightly higher than 100km above sea level.
"A spaceflight is defined as travel through outer space, which is usually defined as anything higher than 100 km above sea level to coincide with the Karman line. 100 km was chosen because that is roughly the point where a vehicle would have to fly faster than orbital speed (which is a function of altitude) in order to derive sufficient aerodynamic lift from the atmosphere to support itself. So any vehicle that travels higher than 100 km yet slower than orbital speed is said to be in Sub-orbital spaceflight."
to me this is a bit of a let down. yes i would technically be in space, experiencing weightlessnes and seeing some pretty spectacular sights, but it just seems too short a time to truly experience life in space. i would much prefer to wait until orbital spaceflight is available so i could at least spend 24 hours in low earth orbit. on the other hand a cash prize is boring to me no matter how much more practical it is. let's have a closer look at the prize:
10. Prize details:
• 2 x return economy flights to the flight base location (location to be confirmed) from nearest Australian capital city
• Visa charges (if required) for Australian, NZ and UK passport holders only.
• Airport transfers and transfers to flight base by limousine (overseas only, not in Australia).
• 5 nights twin share 5 star accommodation for two people in one room in launch city (location to be confirmed)
• Sub-orbital flight for 1 person including pre-flight training
• Customised NOMEX flight suit
• Guided tour of mission base with astronaut or cosmonaut host
• 2 x breakfast, lunch and dinner for five days from arrival date at flight base to departure date (dates to be confirmed), but not before 1 January 2008 and not after 31 December 2001m [what date should this be?].
• 24 hour, local, on-call hosts to look after the prize winner’s requirements
• Video and photographs of the sub-orbital flight
• TOTAL PRIZE VALUE: AUD$147,647
it'd be cool to have one of those flight suits.
so which would you choose if you won---space or the money?
